My research in health communication examines authentic interaction in settings such as HIV treatment, psychotherapy, surgical teamwork, IBD care, palliative care, food and nutrition policy, and community disaster resilience. This work reflects a longstanding interest in how linguistic inquiry can help improve safety and health outcomes – as outlined in my chapter for the Cambridge Handbook of Systemic Functional Linguistics. I have been awarded $2.5M in funding (including NHMRC and ARC), delivered international keynote addresses in Asia, Europe and South America, supervised 20 PhDs, and served in a range of governance and service roles, including as a member of the Westmead Children’s Hospital Research Ethics Committee and as Committee Chair for the Ruqaiya Hasan Prize for ECRs in linguistics (current).
